5 Simple Steps: Getting The Look You Want (Hairstyling Edition)

In all my years as a beauty professional, I’ve never once met a hairstylist who goes into an appointment with the intention of disappointing a client. Still, sometimes the end result just isn’t what you envisioned.

Usually this can be avoided with simple communication. Most potential issues can be avoided by a thorough consultation on the stylist’s end. However, even the most accomplished hairdresser usually isn’t a mind reader. That’s why I’ve compiled a list of 5 simple steps that you as the client can utilize to make sure you get the look you want!

1. Having A Photo for Reference Handy

As artists, we beauty pros are visual people. We can ask all the questions in the world and give verbal confirmation to ensure that we’re on the same page, but the fact of the matter is that everybody has their own interpretation of each look. For example, what one person calls ‘tousled hair’ can be ‘beachy waves’ to another. That’s why it’s important to come armed with a photo of what you’re looking for exactly. Bonus points if you have a picture of yourself. If you are going to use photos of someone else, I recommend making a Pinterest board with multiple versions of the desired style from different angles and explaining to your stylist what you like or don’t like about each photo.

2. Booking Your Appointment Time Accordingly

The standard duration for a blowout with Priv is 45 minutes (or an hour if using hot tools). Understanding that more stylized looks might take a little longer will save both you and your stylist unnecessary stress. If you have to be done by a certain hour, it’s best to allow your stylist enough time to successfully complete the look you want. That way your stylist won’t feel rushed, and can deliver a top notch style while you as the client can relax knowing that you’re in capable hands.

3. Having Realistic Expectations

We all love big sexy hair, or an elegant updo. However, if you’re pulling a reference photo from an ultra styled photoshoot or celebrity walking a red carpet–chances are they might have had a little extra help to achieve that look. Understanding the realm of what’s possible with the hair you have is crucial to getting the look what you want. Then, if need be, you can prepare in advance (adding clip-In extensions, for example).

4. Being Clear About Your Desired Outcome

This ties back to what I said earlier about making a Pinterest board with multiple photos of the look you want. I definitely recommend not only adding photos of what you like, but photos of what you definitely do not like so your stylist knows what to avoid.

5. Speaking Up

As I said in the introduction to this post, no stylist goes into an appointment with the intention of disappointing or underwhelming a client. That being said, it’s important for you as a client to communicate whether you truly like your look or if there’s something a little bit off. Trust me: you aren’t going to hurt our feelings. Our goal as hairstylists is for you to absolutely LOVE your look and we have no problem making edits to ensure that!
